Abstract (english) It is generally accepted that children need physical activity for proper and comprehensive growth and development. It will satisfy the child's need for movement and create the opportunity for a better motor development, which will influence his overall growth. Swimming is one of the basic activities that previous research has shown as a desirable activity for a child to engage in, during development. Different exercises whose aim is to help the child in getting used to water as well as moving through the water lead to specific development of movement coordination, balance and self-control. It is this way of working for a preschooler that gives him/her the opportunity to acquire the motor skills that are required daily in life. Active movement in the water strengthens the muscles of the whole body, which stimulates the proper growth and development of the skeletal system, especially the spine, which promotes proper posture. Swimming impacts the complete cardiovascular system, increasing lung capacity and improving oxygen supply. Swimming also positively affects amplitude of movement flexibility. In addition to improving motor skills, the child is also given the possibility of a safe and carefree stay in and near the water.
Due to the specificity of the media and movement patterns, it is assumed that swimming as an additional activity, can greatly affect the motor development of a preschooler. The findings to date emphasize the importance of engaging a preschool child in an activity such as swimming in order to potentially develop his/hers motor skills and abilities and contribute to a better growth and development. Therefore, the aim of this graduate thesis is to explain the influence of swimming on the development of motor skills in preschool children, through the results of previous research in this field.
