Abstract (english) The correlation between birth weight and motor development of a preschool child The research was conducted on a sample of 873 preschool children from kindergartens of Republic of Croatia. The aim of this research was to establish the correlation between birth weight and motor skills and knowledge of preschool children. For that reason the examinees were divided into two groups: children with a birth weight of less than 2500 g and children with a birth weight of more than 2500 g. The parents completed a questionnaire on the characteristics of childbirth, while the children were tested by the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency with a battery of tests for the assessment of motor knowledge and skills. The obtained results indicate that children of birth weight less than 2500 g do not have a lower level of motor knowledge and skills than children of normal birth weight in preschool age ( F=0.11 ; p= 0.74). The results show a statistically significant difference (F = 4.55; p = 0.03) between children whose pregnancy and / or childbirth went smoothly compared to those who had complications and disorders during childbirth and / or pregnancy. We can conclude that complications and disorders during childbirth and / or pregnancy are definitely one of the key factors to consider when planning an early intervention with a child. The results of this study just prove the importance of early intervention, that although there is no statistically significant difference, children who had participated in early intervention programs achieve numerically better results in tests of motor skills and abilities compared to children who had not participate in intervention programs. Early intervention has once again proven itself crucial not only in children at neurodevelopmental risk, but also in children of average development.
