Abstract (english) The goal of this work was to investigate the effect of certain disruptive factors on regatta sailing success of fourth- and fifth-year students of the Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Zagreb. Among many disruptive factors, the focus was on measuring and analyzing the effect of wave height, visibility, wind speed and level of anxiety. Anxiety was analyzed through a multidimensional approach of anxiety as a current state and as a personality trait. The experiment was conducted on 29 subjects (average age 23.07 years, height 177.64 cm and weight 75.64 kg). All subjects were beginners and equally skilled at sailing. Since the values of wave height (VV), visibility (V) and wind speed (JV) were similar
during 4 days of data collection (VV = 0.3-0.5 m, V = 10-20 km, JV = 3.8 do 6.5 kn), the variation of these variables could not have a significant effect on the performance of beginners sailors. Therefore, those variables were removed from further analysis. Every subject has filled
out the Endler’s EMAS-T questionnaire which assessed anxiety as a trait. Also, the subjects have filled out Endler’s EMAS-S questionnaire every day before the start of the regatta so that state anxiety could be correlated with success in regatta sailing. Statistical significance of
anxiety impact in regatta sailing was shown in 2 out of 8 conducted regattas and is hard to confirm the hypothesis. Statistical significance was displayed in the reduction of somatic anxiety with more exposure to the stressor in the following days. The reduction was greater with the subjects who were assessed higher levels of trait anxiety. There are numerous factors that can affect the success in sailing. The structure and complexity of the sport present the researcher with several approaches to the problem. Unavoidable factors are psychological factors, directly connected to sport performance and sport success. One of the key factors is anxiety which changes depending on the experience and the situation in which the athletes are. We can conculde that anxiety levels as disruptive factors change as a function of the number of days and exposure to stressors and that there are indications that anxiety is associated with success in regatta sailing.
