Abstract (english) Purpose: The aim of this study was to establish how does duration and quality of sleep influence subjective perceived exertion in aerobic training. Methods: Participants of this study were adults engaged in running and associated with running club „Trčaona“. Data was collected from 34 participants from which 20 are female and 14 are male participants. Indicators of quality and quantity of sleep were measured using Fitbit Charge 3 activity and sleep monitor for 14 consecutive days and nights. Measured indicators of sleep were: total sleep time, wake time after sleep onset, sleep efficiency and time in bed. Subjectively perceived exertion in training was graded by participants according to modified Borg scale. At the same time, intensity of training was monitored through Fitbit Charge 3 activity monitor and its wristband heart rate monitor. Also, difference between subjectively perceived exertion (subjectively estimated intensity/estimated heart rate) and objective indicator of effort (wristband measured heart rate). Student T-test for dependent samples was used for determining significance of statistical difference between subjective perceived exertion and objective indicator of effort, depending on quality and quantity of sleep. Multivariate linear regression analysis was used to determine if it is possible to predict the value of subjectively perceived exertion and objective indicator of effort based on multiple parameters of sleep and covariables – age and gender of participants and duration of training session. Results: Analysis showed that none of the parameters of quality and quantity of sleep were linked with subjectively perceived exertion estimated by modified Borg scale. Also, none of the parameters of quality and quantity of sleep were linked with difference between subjectively perceived exertion estimated by modified Borg scale and objective indicator of effort. Results also show that there are no statistically significant differences between subjectively perceived exertion and objective indicator of effort on the days, that is, nights in which participants measured maximal and minimum values of individual indicators of sleep quality or quantity. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that the duration and quality of sleep do not have a statistically significant effect on the subjective experience of exertion in aerobic exercise of recreational exercisers with previous experience. Future research should focus on a longer follow-up period of subjects as well as on groups of subjects with sleep disorders.
