Abstract (english) The main goal of this paper is to describe the bioenergetic, physiological and nutritional characteristics of muscle glycogen and their influence on the adaptation processes of the human body during conduction of sports training. Glycogen has an integral part in regulating the processes of acquiring energy for work, from being a substrate for muscle contraction to structural features in regard to the proteins that make up the glycogen molecule that determine the dynamics of glycogen consumption and repletion during and after an exercise bout. Different anatomical locations of muscle glycogen within the muscle fiber will be used preferentialy depending on the intensity of work and therefore have major influence on the volume of one can do at a specific intensity before these fibers are glycogen depleted. After the exercise bout, nutritional and hormonal aspects dominate the glycogen repletion phase. In this regard, nutritional goals are mainly centered around adequate intake of carbohydrates in dependence to the level of glycogen depletion and the available timeframe to attain adequate glycogen repletion. Other aspects of nutritional intervention have a smaller impact than carbohydrates but can benefit the process in situations when rapid glycogen resinthesis is needed. From an adaptational standpoint, the absolute values of muscle glycogen before and after an exercise bout determine the dominant molecular signalling cascades that will be activated, which will bring about specific adaptation of the organism through programmed repetition of these training units, all in concordance with the needs of a specific sport discipline.
