Abstract (english) Trunk stability is defined as the ability to control the position of the trunk and movement. In swimming, as in any sporting activity, the stability of the trunk is very important for the limbs to be mobile. The main objective of the study was to establish the relationship between trunk stability and lumbar discomfort in young swimmers. The association between lumbar discomfort and swimming efficiency and trunk stability and swimming efficiency was also investigated. The subjects were young male and female swimmers of the Gorica Swimming Club (n=16) aged 11,81 ± 1,05 years. Subjects completed an online questionnaire to assess discomfort for each swimming technique, and tests were performed to assess torso stability: 1. standing still with eyes open on an unstable surface, 2. lateral endurance, 3. endurance in a small bridge, and a test to assess swimming efficiency for each swimming technique separately. The data were processed using the Gyko variables: 1. total distance travelled from the centre of pressure, 2. average squared deviation from the starting point and 3. average frequency of movement of the centre of pressure for the antero-posterior and medio-lateral direction of movement. Variables lateral endurance (left and right), endurance in a small bridge, and a swimming efficiency test for each technique were also used. The data obtained were processed in Statistica 14.0 and correlation analysis was used as the data processing method. The results did not show a statistically significant relationship between the observed variables. Previous research has shown a link between a more stable, stronger trunk and improved performance in certain swimming techniques, which supports the hypothesis that trunk stability and swimming efficiency are not positively correlated. A possible reason for the lack of a link between torso stability and lumbar discomfort is the small number of subjects. A possible reason for the lack of association between trunk stability and lumbar discomfort is the small number of subjects and the wrong selection of tests for trunk stability assessment and the insufficient number of measuring particles. We can conclude that it is necessary to carry out more detailed research on a larger sample from different clubs with another battery of tests.
