Abstract (english) Purpose: The aim of this observational study was to establish the associations between sleep, physical activity and weight status in adolescents based on objective measurement. Methods: This investigation is a part of the CRO-PALS study. For the purpose of this investigation, 123 adolescents (mean age=15.6 years, SD=0.4) with objective data on both sleep and physical activity (PA) were included in the analyses. To objectively measure sleep and PA we asked the participants to wear the SenseWear Pro3 Armband™ (SWA) activity and sleep monitor (BodyMedia Inc) for 5 consecutive days. PA was divided according to intensity in 2 categories; 4 to 7 METs was categorized as moderate physical activity, while physical activity of intensity greater than 7 METs was categorized as vigorous physical activity. PA level was shown as the ratio of total energy expenditure and basal metabolism. Sleep variables included: total sleep time as an indicator of sleep quantity and sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency and wake after sleep onset as indicators of sleep quality. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to find differences in PA and sleep between the groups divided by sex and weight status. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyse the correlation between PA and sleep variables in groups divided by sex and weight status. The correlation of subcutaneous fatty tissue and body mass index with PA and sleep was also analysed in sex-divided groups. Results: There is a statistically significant difference between underweight and normal weight adolescents (group 1) and overweight and obese adolescents (group 2) in the duration of performing both moderate PA and vigorous PA as well as in PA level. The sex-based analyses indicate the difference between girls divided by weight status in the duration of moderate (p=0,014) and vigorous PA (p=0,023), while in boys the difference was found for vigorous PA (p=0,002) and PA level (p=0,03). There was no difference in the parameters of the quantity and quality of sleep in groups divided by sex and weight status. A statistically significant negative correlation was found between PA level and sleep period in underweight and normal weight girls (p=0,012), as well as between vigorous PA and sleep efficiency in overweight and obese boys (p=0,01). Also, a negative correlation was found between S4SF and moderate PA in girls (p=0,03), as well as between S4SF and vigorous PA (p=0,02) and PA level in boys (0,01).
