Abstract (english) The knowledge of swimming is not only one of the motor skills, but it is an important tool in the prevention of drowning. The subject of the research of this skill was to determine the number, ie. the percentage of swimmers and non-swimmers in the population of 2nd grade elementary school children in the City of Zagreb in the period from 2012. to 2018. The research was conducted on 15758 students from 45 primary schools in the City of Zagreb from 11 different city districts. Of the 15,758 students, there were 8,230 boys and 7,528 girls. Five goals and five hypotheses were set. The results of the Chi-square analysis showed that there were statistically significant differences in the percentage of swimmers, ie non-swimmers between certain years (2012. and 2018., 2013. and 2016. and between 2013. and 2018.), while there was a statistically significant difference between swimmers and non-swimmers according to gender. for each year, determined for 2017. only. After the swimming course, Wilcoxon's test of the sum of the ranks determined statistically significant differences between the initial and final measurements for each year individually. Chi-square analysis of student results after the course by year and their mutual comparison revealed a statistically significant difference in the number / percentage of swimmers, ie non-swimmers for most years. By analyzing the frequencies of swimmers / non-swimmers by city districts, the districts with the lowest number of swimmers during the specified time period were identified. In conclusion, there is a growing trend in the percentage of swimmers after the course in the City of Zagreb, which is especially evident in the years after the construction of new pools. The recommendation of this research is to provide new infrastructure in the form of swimming pools in the future, to include swimming safety and rescue lessons in swimming courses, and for physical education and health professors to be an integral part of acquiring students' swimming competence.
